Assalamualaikum and hello,

First and foremost, we would like to say good luck to everyone for their exams and final assignments, and hope that your results will be a just reflection on your hard work and effort (: Brunei Yakin!

Your BSS committee has recently had our first and second meeting, on the 29th of May and the 3rd of June. To keep you, our members, thoroughly informed, and to encourage your contribution, we will be updating you regularly, following our bi-weekly meetings. In light of this, please feel free to suggest your ideas in the Shoutbox, or e-mail us at bssbrisbane@yahoo.com

Our Bruneian QUT students may have received word from the Student Guild that a journalist and cameraman from Brunei will be staying in Brisbane from the 15th ~ 24th of June, hosted by the Australian High Commission in Brunei Darussalam in conjunction with Australian Education International (AEI) and the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR):

"The visit program would include the journalists meeting, interviewing, and filming students about their experience of studying in Australian universities. The media package will then be aired in Brunei as part of the High Commission's public diplomacy program for 2010 - 2011 with the key theme of Education in Australia."

We are currently acquiring more details about the visit, and BSS will assist in playing host to the journalists, and perchance give a more Bruneian insight into the Brisbane lifestyle. If you are a QUT student, and would like to be involved, please do not hesitate to contact Farah, at 0410283542, or Zul at 0406626132.

BSS has decided that the first event the 2010 Committee will be involved with will be various Market Days of the different universities:

University of Queensland (St. Lucia) - 28th July 2010 (10 AM - 3 PM)

Queensland University of Technology (Gardens Point) - 19th & 20th July 2010 (11 AM - 3 PM)
Queensland University of Technology (Kelvin Grove) - 21st July 2010 (11 AM - 3 PM)

N/B: The calendar for the second semester of Griffith University has yet to be confirmed, hence the Market Day dates for the Nathan and Mt. Gravatt campuses will be revised accordingly.

On these days, the Bruneian Students' Society will be one of the many different societies and clubs who will be recruiting new students; besides signing up or renewing your membership, you will also be able to sign up for the Outdoor Paintball Tournament BSS will be hosting in the second semester (date TBA).

As a guide to our new members, we will also be compiling a Survival Guide, entailing tips and experiences regarding accomodation, public transport, halal butchers and restaurants, as well as places of interest, which may be available during the Market Days. Our more adept, older students are more than welcome to send in their suggestions to be added to the booklet; if you have any ideas you would like to share, please e-mail us at bssbrisbane@yahoo.com

In lieu of His Majesty the Sultan's upcoming birthday, the Bruneian Students' Society will also be hosting an event for its members; the suggestions during our discussion has ranged from a formal dinner to a casual BBQ, and is yet to be confirmed; we will keep you posted soon after our representatives are no longer occupied with assignments and exams.

Hope everyone's looking forward to our events!

Brunei Students' Society, Brisbane.

Annual General Meeting 2010

Assalamualaikum and hello (:

The long-awaited BSSBne Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on Sunday, May 16th 2010 from 1 PM onwards at QUT Gardens Point. As such, we are pleased to announce that nominations are now open for the following positions:
  • President
  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • IT Officer
  • Sponsorship Officer
  • Public Relations/ Marketing
  • Events Officer
  • Religious Officer
  • Sports Officer
* Farah Ibrahim and Zulhilmi Zainal will remain in the Committee, but have chosen positions different to what they have held in 2009-2010.
* Azimah Alipah has chosen to retain her position as Secretary; however, if anyone is interested in becoming one, please send in your nominations.

BSSBne is seeking to carry out a somewhat complete overhaul in terms of its strategies, structure and execution; we would therefore very much like you, our members, to become as involved as possible. If you believe yourself, or anyone you know, may be interested in becoming a Committee member, please feel free to send your/their first and last names, university, phone number and email address to:

bssbne.nominees[at]gmail[dot]com.

Although it may seem that the Society may have little to offer its Committee members in comparison to many other groups, it is a stellar opportunity to improve your management, organisation, communication and people skills. Additionally, BSSBne's involvement with other societies and organisations such as the Brunei-Australian Alumni Association, other Bruneian Student Societies in Australia and New Zealand, the Bruneian High Commission to Australia, East West and most recently, RBA, has proved vital in enhancing the prestige of its members' CVs and resumes, as more and more companies the world over are recognizing the value of participation in student groups. Your hard work is, and will be, recognized.

There are no real requirements for joining the Committee besides the fact that you have to be a Bruneian currently studying in Brisbane, and possess a decent sense of determination.

As we're all well aware, BSSBne has had quite a rough year, what with rumors regarding conflicts and lack of integrity and performance being swapped at a seemingly semi-regular basis. In light of that, we have included a no-holds-barred Q&A session in the rundown, where any and all issues and questions regarding BSS may be addressed, which, I imagine, many of you would like to take part in. Please just be informed that these questions should be put forth as professionally as possible, as personal attacks will not be tolerated.

On a lighter note, we are also opening suggestions for BSSBne's tag-line, which will be featured on our blog, Facebook page and documents that may call for its use. This can either be in English, Bruneian Malay or a mixture of both, so talk to your friends and send us your best suggestions to bssbne.nominees[at]gmail[dot]com (: The winner will be unveiled at the AGM, and be awarded an AUD30 Boost Juice gift card!

More details about the AGM will be posted soon, but for now, here's a sneak peek at the rundown:
  • Opening
  • Q&A / Open mic session
  • Presenting nominees and tag-line suggestions
  • Lunch
  • Performance
  • 1st half of election
  • Performance
  • 2nd half of election
  • Finalizing election, unveiling of tag-line
  • Short speech by the new president
  • End!
Questions and suggestions may be sent via e-mail to bssbne[at]gmail[dot]com, and will remain completely anonymous and confidential.

See you soon!

Az
(Madame Secretary / Part-time ninja)

Futsal postponed

Hey folks, as most of you know, BSSBne was planning to host the annual BSS Futsal Invitational Tournament on Saturday, March 27th, with contenders from Malaysia, Singapore and our own Bruneians.

Although the main elements such as the rules and location have long been confirmed, the committee has decided it would be best to postpone the Tournament to a later date, perhaps soon after the semester break, due to the somewhat rushed nature causing problems with registration and minor details.

By rescheduling, the committee hopes to give teams more time to train for the matches, increase the chances of more teams from other countries like Indonesia to also compete, give supporters a chance to perfect their cheer leading skills (ha.ha.ha.) and we ourselves will be fine-tuning the event and execution to make for a great Tournament.

Apologies for any inconveniences caused,
BSSBne.
